Cable Planner is a tool that calculates maximum demand according to Australian and New Zealand Standards (AS/NZS 3000:2007 Wiring Rules). It’s an idea that Ben Franz, a registered electrical contractor, and I came up with while chatting about his work. He explained to me how time consuming it is to calculate maximum demand, and we worked together to create Cable Planner.
Cable Planner guides you through entering the details required for the calculation, and then produces a professional report which you can print. Cable Planner is optimised to work on mobile phone browsers, so you can perform calculations on the job site or anywhere else that has mobile reception. When you return to your base you’ll be able to see the jobs you entered on your phone through your computer’s web browser.
Cable Planner launched in August 2010. At the moment it calculates maximum demand for both domestic installations (houses and units) as well as other installation types (residential institutions, factories, offices, etc). One day I plan to improve it so that it guides you through the Cable Selection rules too (AS/NZS 3008.1.1:2009).
